FFC Week 3: 3 Mile House
Fish Fry Week 3 Review: 3 Mile House, Hazel Green, WI
This weeks fish fry was a last minute change in location. We had planned to go somewhere else, but circumstances led us to need to change the location. By the end of this review, you'll find if we made a good decision or not.
As Wisconsin has been known for its supper clubs, it was no surprise that the 3 Miles House came to our minds as we were thinking of a place to go for a fish fry. It's located just off exit 1 as you cross the bridge into Wisconsin, so a short drive from Dubuque. We had been to the 3 Mile House a few times in the past, but not recently since it just changed ownership.
We were able to make same day reservations for 6:30pm for four of us. We arrived at 6:25pm, and were happily greeted by the bartender as we entered. Even though the bar area was packed with patrons, he called over to us and asked us what we'd like to drink while we were waiting. I, along with another member of our party, ordered an old fashioned. The bartender got us our drinks in record time. We were handed our drinks as they told us our table was ready.
They lead us back to our table and while I had been there before and knew the seating was 'tight', I was very surprised when we got to our table and realized I'd really have to squeeze in as my chair barely could be moved without hitting the person behind me. After we were seated, we noticed that on the table there was a basket of bread, crackers, and a relish tray, which I was delighted to see! But after closer examination, we were quite surprised to see that the relish try was quite sparse. In the middle of the tray was ranch dressing, cheese spread, and braunschweiger dip, and surrounding it was 4 sticks of carrots, 3 slices of green peppers, 3 pieces of cauliflower, and 4 radishes. Yes, it was that easy to count the amounts of veggies on the plate--see photos. It was very surprising to see as it just looked very odd to see so little of veggies. They didn't even cover the entire plate. But nonetheless, the relish tray was good and I really like the cheese spread.
Ok, now on to the rest of the fish fry! Our server stopped by our table shortly after we were seated and gave us our menus. We waited a few minutes to order, but I of course order the Friday special...Cod dinner for $14.50. With the dinner you can choose a salad and potato option. I ordered the broiled cod, with coleslaw and a baked potato. Extra tartar sauce! The others at our tables also ordered fish, and one of us ordered the pike (fish).
Our server very shortly brought out our salad choices. At first glance I knew I wouldn't be too excited about my coleslaw. It was the small chopped up, creamy kind of coleslaw. And it was all white, meaning it wouldn't have the flavor I was hoping for. After taste testing it I decided it needed a little bit of pepper. After that, it didn't taste too bad, but was not my favorite. I have had worse, so in retrospect it was not that bad.
We had barely finished our salads when our dinners came. This was in record time, serious record time. I wished I had timed it. Our fish dinner came with, what appeared to be, 4 small pieces of cod with paprika sprinkled on top. Beside the cod was a small cup of tartar sauce. One cup... (the waitress forgot my extra tartar sauce). I also received my baked potato with sour cream on the side. The presentation of my fish looked a little sloppy, as a couple of my pieces were pulled apart. Upon first bite (without tartar sauce), the taste was OK, but really tasted 'fishy'. Now you're probably saying--um, isn't it supposed to taste 'fishy'? Well, yes, but no. This fish literally tasted like it came right out of the water and I would find a bone in it at any second. That kind of 'fishy' taste I do not like. And adding the tartar sauce to it did not help. The tartar sauce was mayo based, but did not have enough relish in it, so it was heavily mayo flavored. The fish definitely tasted better with the tartar sauce, but was not enough to make me excited to tell others about this fish fry. I did take a few bites of the baked potato and did notice that it seemed over cooked but was still OK. I decided to box it up and take it home.
Service/environment: our server was very nice and very accommodating. She was prompt with bringing us everything we requested, but I did not care for how tight of a fit it was with the tables. Seats were very close to each other and it was difficult and awkward when you were trying to be seated.
Overall comments/rating: the 3 Mile House definitely has a great supper club vibe to it, but the tables are way too close for comfort. Their effort to give you a relish tray was appreciated, but if they're going to be that cheap on the amount of veggies on the plate they might as well as not have a relish tray, as it looked much worse with so little on the plate. The fish was very "fishy", and they really need to work on their presentation of the placing the fish on the plate. The tartar sauce was OK, but needed more relish. My other dinner items of coleslaw and potato are nothing to write more about. The service was really good, and was honestly the best thing about the experience. $14.50 for this dinner was way overpriced in my opinion.
I'm giving 3 Mile House a 5 out of 10. There were a few too many things that didn't impress me, and it seemed very pricey for what you got and the quality and flavor of what you got. At this time, I'm not so sure I'd go back for a fish fry, but maybe would be willing to try another item on their menu.
