FFC Week 7: Asbury Eagles Club
Week 7 Review: Asbury Eagles Club, Asbury, IA
For our final fish fry we made a last minute decision to head to one of our 2017 fish fry favorites, and winner of the 2017 challenge!
As we knew from last year, you must get there early as its quite a popular place to go. Being that we have a baby this year, we arrived around 7pm. The fish fry dinner buffet cost was $13/person, and they asked you right away what type of fish you'd like brought to your table first--baked or fried. I ordered the baked fish. There was no wait so we were able to get seated right away and it was much easier to get through the dinning room this year, even though the dining room was full of people enjoying their fish dinners.
After we were seated we were instructed that we could go up to the buffet line and pick the rest of our dinner items, as the fish would be delivered to our table shortly. The buffet items included: baked potato, corn, tossed salad, coleslaw, broccoli/cauliflower salad, a few other 'salads', a dinner role, and for dessert a chocolate brownie--with frosting! I love that they had corn and the broccoli/cauliflower salad as you never see those as part of fish fry's.
As we had arrived around 7pm, I was surprised to see that I grabbed one of the very last baked potatoes, and the last small spoonful of corn. I also started to hear from the workers that they were running out of fish. So I immediately ordered us more baked & fried fish.
What was still available from the buffet that I chose was a tossed salad, coleslaw, and the broccoli/cauliflower salad. The salad, with dressing, was very good, the coleslaw needed some pepper, but was the creamy coleslaw that I typically like. The broccoli/cauliflower salad was OK...but not great.
Our fish came in record time and I had the baked. The baked fish was very, very good. It had a very light seasoning on it and paired with exactly the right tartar sauce I love, it was extremely tasty! The next piece of fish was just as good, and at least we were able to get an additional piece of fish before it ran out.
The side items of the baked potato and corn were also very good. The disappointing thing was that I literally had two spoonfuls of corn and it was gone. These were both great items to have with the meal, but I was sad they ran out.
For the dessert they had brownies. Amazing brownies! And I was very happy that they still had those left! Great end to the dinner!
Server/environment: we didn't have anyone come by our table and had to find a server to ask for more fish. The environment was fine, not too loud, and it was much easier to move through the dining room this year. The buffet line was also not set up the greatest as there was a traffic jam of people at the end of the buffet line and you had to be aggressive to get to your last food items .
Overall comments: the baked fish was very, very good and I loved the tartar sauce. The salad items and side items were OK. Since we had gone here last year for a fish fry it was hard not to realize what we were missing.

Overall rating: I really enjoyed the fish at this fish fry, but everything else was mediocre, except for the tartar sauce & brownie :) So I am giving it a 8 out of 10 since it is really all about the fish, right?
