FFC Week 2: Rhody's

Week 2 Review: Rhody's, Dubuque, IA

During the fish fry season we gather our family and go to Rhody's as we have highly enjoyed this establishment for the past few years.  And we decided again to chose Rhody's to be a part of our fish fry review.

As we had a large group of 11 going, we made a reservation ahead of time.  When we arrived, I was happy to see they had our table set up and ready for us.  It was not very busy at 6:30pm which was very surprising to me as typically its really very busy on a Friday night.

Our server came by our table right away and asked for our drink order.  While we were waiting for our drinks to come and server to come back, I perused the menu and noticed that the Friday night fish fry did not have the words "All You Can Eat" next to it like it did last year.  I asked the table if they knew and I was sadly informed that they no longer offer the AYCE fish fry!  I was very surprised and saddened as I was planning to try both the cod & catfish.

Our server came back with our drinks and then started to take our orders.  I (of course) ordered the Fish special, Cod or Catfish, which include choice of potato, and full salad bar for $13.99 (at least they didn't increase the price since last year!)  I ordered the fried catfish, and a baked potato.

After ordering, we slowly made our way to the salad bar area.  I typically love their salad bar (well heck I love all salad bars).  They had a soup option and rolls, and then came the lettuce... or should I say 'shredded' lettuce. I was very disappointed that it wasn't actual lettuce and merely shredded lettuce, which I thought was strange, and well, cheap.  The rest of the salad bar consisted of cold creamy salads and I took the macaroni salad, crab salad, and coleslaw.  I also took cheese spread and crackers.

The (shredded) lettuce salad (with french dressing) was good, but would have preferred actual lettuce vs. the shredded lettuce.  Another thing I am so surprised that they still have not added to their toppings is cheese and croutons! They are easy things to have available, but apparently not enough people complain or request these for them to add to the salad bar.  The macaroni salad I had was OK, it really didn't have a lot of flavor.  The coleslaw was not my favorite either, but I couldn't really pinpoint why I didn't care for it.  The crab salad was actually really good and had just the right amount of "creaminess".  The cheese spread and crackers were a nice item to have post salad.  Overall, the salad bar offered a good amount of options and overall was pretty tasty.

Our fish dinners came out shortly after we finished our salads. I was presented with a plate of three fairly good sized pieces of catfish, a baked potato (with sour cream) and tartar sauce.  Yes, I had ordered extra tartar sauce and our server brought out a small bowl of tartar sauce, which was awesome of her!

My first cut in to the catfish I noticed that it was very tough to cut the catfish with just my fork.  However, upon tasting the catfish it had a great flavor and, as I had hoped, paired very well with the great tasting tartar sauce.  The tartar sauce was perfect. And I knew it would be. Rhody's always has had great tasting tartar sauce, so I thank our server for our bowl of tartar sauce!   Going back to the catfish...as I cut in to the other two pieces of catfish, they too were very tough to cut in to but still tasted really good.  I also took a few bites of my baked potato and it was really good, but I ended up taking it home with me.

After our meal was finished our server did ask us if we wanted desserts as Rhody's has some great pie options. And a few people at our table did order pie, which I got to sample. Their ho-ho pie was excellent!

As far as the server/environment: our server did a very good job. She checked on us regularly and didn't forget anything.  And she brought a bowl of tartar sauce!!!  Rhody's wasn't too busy on this night so that made for a better dining experience.

Overall comments: the fried catfish was tough, but had a good taste and I really liked the tartar sauce. The salad bar had some good options, but I was disappointed to see that they used 'shredded' lettuce. The big let down of the experience was that it wasn't an AYCE fish fry, as I had expected and hoped for.  It definitely looks like Rhody's is changing their style of fish fry's just as many other establishments are doing as well.

Overall rating: I am giving it a 7 out of 10.  Catfish was good, but was tough (is it supposed to be tough? I don't recall it being tough last year). The salad bar could still use some shredded cheese & croutons! And I would recommend to Rhody's to bring back the 'real' lettuce instead of having shredded lettuce.  As they no longer have the AYCE option, I thought the $13.99 was little much for what you all get, but I feel like a lot of fish fry's are going up in prices and are no longer offering an all you can eat option.  The company was great, as its always fun to get together with family!  I always recommend Rhody's to others for their fish fry, and I will continue to do so as it is an overall good fish fry, and fun place to go.
